Volunteer Role: Cancer and Wellbeing Champion
Based: One Place East’s office, London Borough of Redbridge
We are looking to recruit a new team of Volunteer Cancer and Wellbeing Champions. Disabled people who want to make a difference in their community.
About the role:
A volunteer Cancer and Wellbeing Champion’s role at One Place East (OPE) involves talking to, and empowering your community to reduce cancer fear, promote early detection through screening, and encourage healthy lifestyles. Champions help people understand cancer signs, navigate the health system, access support services, and overcome barriers to care, often by attending events, providing information, and signposting local resources.
Why We Need You:
One Place East is working to improve access to cancer screening and treatments for Disabled People across North East London. We want to ensure they have the same opportunities for early detection and improved outcomes after treatment. Cancer affects all of us but we want to make sure Disabled People have the same chances of survival as everybody else.
- Having simple chats with people raising awareness of cancer and local services
- Provide peer support helping people speak up and access needed services
- Listen to people to help them overcome barriers
- Share positive messages to break down myths about cancer
- Show care and understanding
- You will learn something new from every conversation
- Free training to give you with the knowledge and skills to raise cancer awareness (Mondays between 3rd November and 15th December)
- Chance to gain two Public Health (RSPH) Level 2 qualifications
- Help Disabled People get improved health outcomes and overcome barriers to services
- Gain experience in event planning, making presentations and health promotion. All valuable skills for life and work and get references from OPE when looking for work
- Explore how to look after your own health and reduce the risk of cancer
