Project Description

One Place Creative

One Place Creative (OPC) aims to raise awareness of employment opportunities in the creative industries. Targeted at disabled people, the project also aims to address barriers keeping beneficiaries away from this growing segment of the labour market.

Grounded in the mapping of the skills, experience and interests of the One Place East community in 2018/19, OPC will have a focus on film making, digital content, photography, copywriting and production.

The aims will be achieved through the following interventions:

  • Assessment and career plan development
  • Training workshops on key skills and segments of the creative economy delivered by industry professionals
  • Practical experience of producing films, podcasts, digital content and supporting materials as part of the project
  • Mentoring and workplace visits with industry professionals
  • Signposting and referral to specialist advice, training and support services
  • Personal and skill development through peer support

We will be working with several industry professionals in the areas of:

  • writing copy for websites
  • digital media
  • podcasts and publicity
  • photography
  • filming, and lighting techniques
  • developing and planning the productions

The one day workshops will aim to offer mentoring to the groups depending on their schedules.

Project Objective:

  1. To conduct community outreach to identify and recruit a team of 22 disabled people aged 18-65 with an interest in creative and digital industries
  2. To raise awareness of different career and training opportunities within the creative and digital sectors
  3. To increase the knowledge and competency of the recruited team through workshops, visits and coaching from industry specialists
  4. To develop the practical skills of the team by making films, podcasts and online content around the lived experience of team members with disabilities.
  5. To facilitate peer support and mentoring of less skilled team members by more experienced members of the group.

We have developed supportive relationships with a range of industry professionals, some BAFTA winners or worked on well-known and widely acclaimed television shows or films.

During the project, the participants wrote a storyline for a soap called “The Not Surers”. You can watch the first episode here.
