Cancer Awareness Project
Building on the celebrated work last year, OPE has secured funding from NHS North East London Cancer Alliance (NELCA) to deliver further activities this year.
Our project aims to improve health outcomes for Deaf and Disabled People 18+ years of age. We use the term ‘Disabled people’ to refer to people living with impairments. This includes people living with physical, visual, or hearing impairments, learning difficulties, mental ill-health and long-term health conditions. 13% of the population in N.E. London is disabled under the Equality Act.
- Creating the new Peer Cancer Champion Volunteer role at OPE.
- Delivering a new modular Cancer Champion Training Programme that will include two qualifications.
- Co-produce with newly trained Cancer Champions an awareness workshop to be delivered through outreach to Disabled People in other community settings.
- Deliver a programme of online and in-person health workshops, all with an embedded cancer message.
- Co-produce a cancer-themed podcast for the OPE In Conversations Series.
- Evaluate the project and share our learning with other NHS and community partners across East London.
- Raise awareness on how to prevent cancer.
- Raise awareness on how to spot cancer sooner.
- Reduce barriers to screening and access to services.
- Increase community-based health and well-being support.
- Create new opportunities for People with Disabilities by developing their skills, knowledge, and resilience.
